Columbia Heights Man Charged With Second-Degree for Death of his Teenage Son
Collins Sr. is charged with second-degree murder. The criminal complaint says Manny’s mother reported him missing on May 12.
She told law enforcement Manny was living with his father and that she last heard from her son on the morning of May 8.
Collins Sr. told law enforcement that Manny was planning to take a bus to St. Paul to visit his grandmother and girlfriend, however the court document says Manny never showed up.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Collins Sr.’s home in Columbia Heights on May 15 and found a garbage bag containing blood-stained items and multiple knives, the complaint says.
Investigators also found a mattress that was missing part of its cover and a piece of missing carpet on the floor of one of the home’s bedrooms.
On May 17 investigators matched the blood found in the home with a DNA sample belonging to Manny, according to the court document.
Authorities also reviewed security camera footage that showed a large dumpster located behind Collins Sr.’s home into a garbage truck bound for the Waste Management landfill in Elk River.
Investigators began a large-scale search of the landfill last month and were able to pinpoint the location of the dumpster’s contents using Waste Management’s GPS system.
On June 28, law enforcement located remains that were identified as Manny in the landfill, the complaint says.
Preliminary results of an autopsy done on Manny found evidence he died of decapitation. The manner of his death was ruled a homicide, according to the court document.
Collins Sr.’s conditional bail was set at $2 million Wednesday morning. He is due back in court next month.
