The annual report from the State Fire Marshal’s Office shows the number of fire-related deaths in Minnesota declined 12-percent last year and were down about 50-percent when compared to the total from the first ever report issued by the office 25 years ago. The death toll fell from 50 in 2012 to 44 in 2013.

The report also notes that unattended cooking has joined careless smoking as the leading causes of fatal fires in Minnesota.
