Apple Valley, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Burnsville teenager has avoided a long prison sentence for causing a crash that killed 2 people while drag racing on a busy suburban highway in the Twin Cities.

19-year-old Leon Bond yesterday admitted to two counts of third-degree murder in connection with the deaths of 22-year-old Tayler Garza of Woodbury and 22-year-old Dalton Ford of Burnsville. They were killed on April 4, 2021, when a car driven by Bond smashed into their vehicle on Dakota County Road 42 in Burnsville. Bond was drag racing a car driven by his older sister when the deadly collision occurred.

Bond was 17 years old at the time, but Dakota County prosecutors had sought to have Bond prosecuted as an adult. That request was denied by the judge assigned to the case, who placed Bond into the state's Extended Juvenile Jurisdiction system. That means that Bond, who was given an adult sentence of 25 years in prison, will be released from the state's Juvenile Correctional Facility in Red Wing on his 21st birthday.

His sister, 22-year-old Camille Dennis-Bond was convicted of third-degree murder and other charges last month. She was 20 years old at the time of the fatal crash and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 24.
