St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minnesota woman has been sent to prison for the death of her infant daughter.

Court documents filed in the case indicate St. Paul police responded to a 911 call in December 2023 concerning a one-year-old child who was not breathing. According to the criminal complaint, the 911 dispatcher could hear a voice in the background yelling, "where is the Narcan."

The officers who responded to the call reported that paramedics were working on a young girl when they arrived at the scene and that it appeared the child had ingested something. The charges say the infant's mother, 21-year-old Tessa Jean Vorlicky had fled the scene on foot before the officers arrived, but she was detained a short time later.

The baby was rushed to a hospital, where she was officially pronounced dead several days later.

The criminal complaint says investigators executed two search warrants at the home and found multiple pieces of burnt tinfoil on the floor, along with numerous items of drug paraphernalia, narcotic residue, a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, and a baggie of suspected drugs. The court document also states that dog feces were found on the floor in the home.

According to court documents, St. Paul police investigators learned that a hold had been placed on the child after her birth because Vorlicky was using fentanyl while she was in labor at the hospital.

An autopsy ruled the infant's death was due to acute fentanyl toxicity. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office reported that fentanyl was detected in the child's body and a piece of folded up tinfoil was recovered from her colon.

Vorlicky was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter. In January, she entered into a plea agreement and admitted to one of the charges.

Vorlicky has now been sentenced to four years in prison. She was given credit for 291 days she has already served in jail prior to her sentencing.

The child's father, 37-year-old Derrick Marshawn Harrison of St. Paul, was charged with felony child endangerment in the case. Court records indicate he was not at the home at the time of the drug overdose, but admitted to police that he knew about Vorlicky's drug use and acknowledged that the child could have been left in a safer place.
