CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The hunt is on for a man police say walked into a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina, last night and opened fire, killing nine people, including the pastor of Emanuel AME Church, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney.

Police Chief Greg Mullen says he believes the shooting by a man described as white and in his 20s was a hate crime and Mullen says the FBI will assist local authorities in the investigation.

Mullen says a prayer meeting was going on at the church at the time of the shooting.
