Rochester Native Among 3 First Responders Killed in MN Shooting

Burnsville, MN (KROC-AM News)- Officials have identified the two Minnesota police officers and the paramedic who was killed by a gunman early Sunday morning.

A news release issued Sunday afternoon by the City of Burnsville says police responded to a domestic abuse call at a residence in the 12600 block of 33rd Avenue South around 1:50 a.m.

Initial reports indicated an armed man was barricaded inside of the home with family members. The news release says, “the situation escalated into gunfire with responders,” after police and other emergency personnel arrived.

As a result of the gunfire Burnsville Police Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge and Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth lost their lives, the news release says.

Sources have informed KROC News that Finseth graduated from Rochester John Marshal High School and is the son of a former City of Rochester employee. His Linked In profile says he graduated high school in 2001 and served four years in the Army that included a tour of duty in Iraq.

A third police officer, identified as Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also hit by gunfire. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The news release includes a brief synopsis of the slain first responders:

Elmstrand, 27, joined the Burnsville Police Department in August 2017 as a Community Service Officer. He was promoted to Officer in July 2019. He was part of the department’s mobile command staff, peer team, Honor Guard and field training unit.

Ruge, 27, joined the Burnsville Police Department in April 2020. He was part of the department’s crisis negotiations team and was a physical evidence officer.

Finseth, 40, has been a Burnsville Firefighter/Paramedic since February 2019.

The Minnesota BCA says the gunman died in the shooting. His name has not been released.

The state agency is continuing to investigate the tragic incident and plans to release more information upon completion of the preliminary investigation.
