The criminal complaint, filed Tuesday in Olmsted County Court, says Rochester Police responded to the burglary in northeast Rochester shortly before 8:15 a.m. A woman said she, her husband and her adult son were sleeping when they heard the sound of their door being kicked in.

The woman said they recognized the alleged burglar as 34-year-old Kayla Ryane-Marie Richards. The complaint says Richards began fighting with the son then pushed his mother to the ground when she intervened.

The woman said Richards bit her arm then took her son’s medication and car keys. A neighbor at the property told police the victim gave him her phone to call 911 but Richards knocked the phone out of his hands, the complaint says.

Richards then left in the son’s car and the neighbor called 911 from his own phone. Court documents say Richards and the son at the home had a child in common.

She was arraigned Tuesday on felony charges of first-degree burglary, burglary with first-degree assault, domestic assault and misdemeanor counts of assault and interfering with an emergency call.

Court records indicate Richards's criminal history in Olmsted County includes convictions for robbery, third-degree assault and fifth-degree assault. Her conditional bail was set at $15,000 and her next court appearance is set for July 3.
