Rochester Public Utilities is sticking with its renewable energy goal.

RPU General Manager Tim McCollough was a guest on the Rochester Today show with Andy Brownell on News-Talk 1340 KROC-AM and 96.9 FM. During his appearance on Wednesday, McCollough explained the recent decision of the Rochester Public Utilities Board to continue pursuing its goal of meeting 100% of the city’s electrical power needs through renewable sources by the year 2030.

Wind and Solar Credits to Offset Nonrenewable Use

McCollough clarified that it is a net goal and does not mean 100% of the electricity used in Rochester will directly come from renewable sources. Instead, RPU plans to contract with wind and solar power generators to purchase electricity and “bank credits” that can be used to offset electricity generated by nonrenewable sources — helping achieve the net renewable target.

RPU Plans Flexible Path Toward Clean Energy Future

According to McCollough, the strategy adopted by the RPU Board gives the municipal utility flexibility to meet Rochester’s future energy needs. He described it as a “middle-ground approach” that recognizes the community’s desire for an aggressive renewable energy goal, but also the need to move carefully.

“We may have to go a bit slower, but we’re going to keep trying,” McCollough said.
