Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Police say a 4th-grade Teacher at Rochester Arts and Science Academy was stabbed by a man while she was walking near Folwell Elementary School with a small group of students following a visit to a nearby park.

Police Lieutenant Mike Sadauskis says the 24-year-old woman and the children encountered the man as he was walking on the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street in the vicinity of 18th Avenue and Folwell Drive Southwest around 3 PM. At some point, the man crossed the street and approached the group from behind while swinging a bag at the children and the woman, who responded by placing herself between the man and the students.

The woman told police he then came up behind her and stabbed her in the back with a long shiny metal object. She was transported to St. Marys Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Lieutenant Sadauskis noted she was able to remain on her feet throughout the incident and assisted the responding officers.

The suspect, who was later identified as 28-year-old David Galvan, fled on foot along Highway 52 toward Apache Mall and eventually apprehended by an Olmsted County Deputy in the 600 block of Memorial Parkway Southwest. Officers located long pointed scissors in the suspect’s waistband.

Sadauskis says he does not have a permanent address and has had numerous previous contacts with the police.

UPDATE: Sadauskis says Galvan - who is described as homeless - has been involved in 26 incidents with RPD officers in the past 2 years.
