Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  A burst of snow hit parts of southeast Minnesota Wednesday afternoon, creating slick driving conditions that lasted into the evening.

There were numerous traffic accidents and mishaps in Rochester, throughout Olmsted County and the surrounding region. So far, the only fatal traffic wreck that has been reported happened in Olmsted County around 4 p.m near Byron.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s office says a man was trying to pass another vehicle on Country Club Road near Olmsted County Road 3 when his vehicle collided nearly head-on with an approaching truck.

The man - 51 year old Robert Mast of Dodge Center - had to be cut from the wreckage.  He was alert when taken to St. Mary’s but later died.  The driver of the truck - 49 year old Randy Clement - was treated for minor injuries.

It appears the snow will give residents in the area a white Christmas. Snowfall totals reported to the National Weather Service were generally in the 2- 4 inch range. The Rochester airport total was 3.8 inches.

A clipper is forecast to hit the region Friday evening and it could dump several inches of snow by the time it moves out on Saturday. Cold air will slide in behind the storm.
