Winona County Sheriff Ron Granrude Announces Retirement

Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - Another long-time southeastern Minnesota sheriff has announced retirement plans.

Winona County Sheriff Ron Granrude announced today that he has decided not to seek reelection this fall. He has held the office since he was elected in November 2014 to succeed Sheriff Dave Brand.

Decades-Long Law Enforcement Career

In his announcement, Sheriff Granrude indicated his law enforcement career began in 1980 when he joined the St. Charles Police Department. He later accepted a position with the Winona County Sheriff’s Office in 1986 and was promoted to chief deputy in 1999.

The sheriff says his decision to step away from the office was not an easy one, but stated, “I truly feel this is the right decision for me and the next chapter in my life.”

Challenges and Accomplishments

The statement emphasized the teamwork he has experienced within the Sheriff’s Office and the Winona County community while facing numerous challenges, including natural disasters, public safety crises, and the changing demands of modern policing.

“I am proud of the progress we’ve made improving training, strengthening community partnerships, expanding mental health resources, and making sure the Sheriff’s Office is professional, accountable, and responsive to the people we serve,” Granrude said.

Second Area Sheriff to Retire

Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson also recently announced he will not seek another term in office. He was first elected sheriff in 2014 after joining the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office in 1986.
