Winona, MN (KROC-AM News)- The nearly month-long search for a missing southeast Minnesota woman has come to a tragic end.

72-year-old Patricia Sweningson was last seen in downtown Winona last month. 

The Winona Police Department said the Winona woman's disappearance had been under investigation since March 26.

The Winona County Sheriff’s Office led a search of the Mississippi River near Winona as part of that investigation earlier this month. Officials reported nothing of significance was found.

On Wednesday, authorities reported recovering a body from the river.

The remains were located at Lock and Dam 6, which is about nine miles downriver from Winona and was the southern end of the area searched on April 4.

The body was found on the Minnesota side of the river and firefighters from the Winona Fire Department rappelled down the face of the dam to retrieve the remains. 

Body Found in Mississippi River Identified as 72-year-old Patricia Sweningson

A news release issued Friday by the Winona Police Department says the body found on Wednesday has been identified as Sweningson. 

The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office made the identification during an autopsy. 

Winona police say foul play is not suspected in her death but say the case is considered ongoing and active as investigators wait for more information from the medical examiner.
