The State Health Department says it received a dozen applications from parties seeking to become one of two state-licensed medical marijuana manufacturers.

The application deadline was Friday. The department has said it plans to select the two manufacturers by December 1st. The manufacturers will be responsible for securely growing the marijuana, processing it into a pill or liquid form, and distributing the products through a network of eight dispensaries around Minnesota.

The department says the applicants, which each paid a $20,000 non-refundable fee, will not be identified until the selection process is complete.
