It is with regret I write these words. Bunnie Powers, known in Rochester for her Coconut Cake, her incredible spirit, her community work, and her unforgettable kindness, has passed away.

According to the Macken Funeral Home, with her family by her side, Bunnie Powers passed 8:30 Saturday evening, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 89.

Bunnie's story began in 1930, in Bellchester, Minnesota. It was up on Pepin Hill where she was raised, growing up on the family's Wabasha farm, and then, as an adult moved to Rochester.

She met and married James Powers in 1955, both of them working at Mayo Clinic, Bunnie in the Mayo business office, until her sons, Joe and Cris, opened the Canadian Honnker Restaurant. At that point, she went to work in the restaurant for 30 years.

Her obituary states...

She was active in her church St. Francis of Assisi and belonged to the St. Joan of Arc CCW. Bunnie was a Eucharistic Minister, Lay Carmelite, and former member of The Serra Club and was on the Finance Committee at St. Francis Church. She also was also a member of the Apostle League at Prior Lake Retreat and a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary where she was a past president. Bunnie was a fundraiser for Guest House Bishops Reception; a cover girl for the Rochester Women’s Magazine and was famous for her coconut cake.

I had the good fortune of sitting next to Bunnie at a couple of events and thoroughly enjoyed her company and graciousness to a loud guy like me.
