Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Salvation Army is reporting some unusual and generous donations to its annual Red Kettle fundraising campaign.

Along with the usual donations of cash and coins, the local holiday fundraising effort to support the many programs of the Salvation Army has also brought in a gold Krugerrand coin, other gold coins, a set of gold fillings, and silver certificates.

Major Bob Mueller says, "It's actually a really fun part of the kettle season, and adds, "you just never know what's going to show up in those kettles."

It's estimated the value of the Krugerrand, alone, is around $1,500.

The Salvation Army is gearing up for a critical couple of days for the annual fundraising campaign and is actively recruiting people to serve as bellringers at the donation kettles on Thursday and Friday this week. The Mayo Clinic has offered to match all of the donations to the Red Kettles on those two days without a limit on the total amount.
