The finalists have been revealed in the 2023 official 'Name a Snow Plow' Contest here in Minnesota, and here's how you can vote for your favorites.

It was a few years ago that the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) launched its first-ever Name a Snowplow Contest, where one snowplow in each of MnDOT's 8 districts received its own distinct name, as voted on by Minnesotans all over the state. Over 60,000 votes were cast in last year's contest, which ended in February.

By the way, just in case you forgot, here in our neck of the woods in southeast Minnesota, we're in MnDOT's District 6, and our winning snowplow name in 2021 was 'Snowbi Wan Kenobi' while 'Edward Blizzardhands' won in 2022.

MnDOT said Thursday they received over 10,000 submissions for this year's snow plow names, which they narrowed down to 60 finalists. Voting is now open for all Minnesotans, and you get to choose 8 of your favorites before the contest closes on February 3rd, 2023.

I voted earlier and my choices were names that all have some reference to the Land of 10,000 Lakes:

  • Better Call Salt
  • Blader Tot Hotdish
  • Camp Scoopy
  • Harmon Chillebrew
  • L'etoile du Nordy
  • Miracle on Ice
  • Plowie Anderson
  • Spirit of '91

Okay, the 'Better Call Salt' isn't specific to Minnesota, but I'm a big fan of the show. You don't have to take my choices, of course, you can vote for your own 8 favorite snow plow names on the MnDOT website.

And in case you're curious, here were the rules MnDOT used when selecting this year's 60 finalists:

  • Each person may submit up to three names.
  • Each submission is limited to a maximum of 30 characters.
  • Previous winning names will not be considered. Additionally, any politically inspired names (including phrases, slogans, or plays on politicians’ names) or names including profanity or inappropriate language will be excluded.
  • The contest is intended to be fun, lighthearted, family-friendly and non-political.
