Bagley, MN (MinnesotaNow) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in northern Minnesota.

The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office says the deadly incident occurred following a police chase in Bagley Thursday afternoon. A news release says the pursuit began after a sheriff's deputy spotted a man wanted on a felony arrest warrant at a gas station shortly after noon.

Authorities Say the Suspect Fought Against the Arresting Officer

The statement says the two men ended up in a physical altercation when the deputy attempted to take him into custody. The sheriff’s office says the man was able to get into his vehicle and flee, with the deputy pursuing him east on Highway 2.

According to the news release, the suspect veered into the oncoming lane of traffic several times as he was being pursued by the deputy and Bagley police officers. The pursuit ended after the man drove his vehicle through two residential yards in Bagley.

The Fatal Shooting Occurred After the Suspect Fired a Flare at Officers

Deputies and officers then attempted to remove the man from the vehicle. A statement from the sheriff's office says the man fired a large “flare-like projectile” at the officers, and a deputy responded by shooting the suspect.

The news release says life-saving measures were performed at the scene, but the man died from his injuries. One of the deputies involved was treated for a minor injury.

The sheriff's office says the body cameras worn by the officers involved were activated during the incident.

The name of the deceased suspect and the involved law enforcement officers have not been released.
