Lake City, MN (KROC-AM News) - A rescue operation was launched Thursday evening after authorities in Lake City were informed that a vehicle had crashed into Lake Pepin.

The Lake City Police Department says emergency responders were sent to Roschen Park just before 5:45 PM. A news release states that Lake City Police, the Lake City Fire Department, and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and found a submerged vehicle.

The law enforcement statement says a Lake City police officer and several firefighters entered the water and successfully removed the lone occupant from the vehicle. The person was then transferred to a Lake City Fire Department rescue boat and brought to shore.

"The Lake City Police Department is proud of the swift and courageous actions of our officers and all emergency responders involved in yesterday's water rescue," said Lake City Chief of Police Cory Kubista. "This was a coordinated effort that reflects the dedication and professionalism of our public safety teams."

Lake City Police indicated the driver was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Information about the extent of the individual's injuries is not available.

The name of the driver has not been released. Lake City Police say preliminary witness accounts suggest the driver may have deliberately driven into the lake.

The news release says the incident remains under investigation.
