New Mayo Center to Bring Carbon Ion Cancer Therapy to U.S.
Jacksonville, FL (KROC-AM News) - While Mayo Clinic is focusing the majority of its capital investments in Rochester, it also continues to make major investments in its facilities in Arizona and Florida.
Mayo Clinic announced this week a 228,000-square-foot advanced cancer treatment center at its campus in Jacksonville, Florida. A news release says the Duan Family Building will house the first carbon ion therapy program in the Western Hemisphere.

"Carbon ion therapy and other heavy particle therapies are the advanced radiation therapies of our future," said Dr. Cheryl Willman, executive director of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. "When battling our patients' complex, currently radioresistant cancers at Mayo Clinic, we need the advantage of these next-gen radiation tools, which can be fine-tuned to target and treat aggressive tumors while minimizing the impact to surrounding tissue."
Actual treatments using carbon ion therapy are not expected to begin until 2028, while the facility’s proton therapy capabilities are expected to become operational in 2027. Mayo Clinic says the new center will also offer other advanced cancer treatments along with sophisticated imaging technology.
