Update: 10-17 9:20 a.m. Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Rochester Police Department says an officer got a 74-year-old man out of his house during a kitchen fire Sunday night.

Police Captain Casey Moilanen says the man's neighbor called in the blaze around 8:45 p.m. The neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the home in the 1600 block of 8th Ave. Southeast and attempted to help the man out of the house as he was trying to extinguish a fire that had started in the kitchen.

When the man wouldn't leave, the neighbor called 911. A Rochester police officer in the neighborhood responded and evacuated the man from the home. The Rochester Fire Department then arrived and observed flames coming from the roof at the back of the home, according to a news release.

Firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to other parts of the home. The 74-year-old homeowner was checked out at the scene then transported to a hospital for further care by Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

The fire department says the severity of the man's injuries are unknown. The damage estimate from the fire is still being determined.

Officials are also investigating how the fire started. The Rochester Fire Department is  using the call to remind residents to ensure their smoke detectors are working and  to immediately exit their home then call 911 from a safe place if their smoke alarm goes off.

A news release from the Rochester Fire Department says firefighters responded to the blaze in the 1600 block of 8th Ave. Southeast around 8:45 p.m. Arriving crews reported seeing flames coming from the roof in the back of the home.

Firefighters swept the home for occupants and prevented the fire from spreading to other rooms in the home. Officials are still working to estimate the damage cost from the fire.

The identity of the person injured in the blaze has not been released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
