Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council has taken the first step in changing the oversight of the governance and operations of the Mayo Civic Center.

There are still other major decisions to be made but Wednesday’s vote set in motion the process of creating a new entity.

One of the major decisions facing the council is where to place the governing authority - under a non-profit entity or the city. In either case, a board of directors would be appointed to oversee the MCC and Experience Rochester. It’s also likely an executive director will be hired to run the day-to-day operations of both.

Before the vote, several MCC employees addressed the council, expressing their concerns about losing their jobs. They also asked for more time to examine the financial and other problems that led to the council’s vote. But council members told the employees the problems have persisted for years. The council’s vote does include a recommendation that the city will do all it can to ensure the workers retain their jobs or find another position.

City Administrator Steve Rymer will provide more information including a timeline for the transition at a Dec 10th meeting.
