Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Job growth slowed modestly last month in the Rochester area, but the local growth rate remains much higher than in other parts of Minnesota.

According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the Rochester area has added more than 5,750 jobs over the past 12 months, resulting in a robust annual job growth rate of 4.5%. Last month, the area’s job growth rate was about 5% due to the addition of nearly 6,400 jobs over the prior year.

The updated jobs data from the state shows job growth rates in other Minnesota metro areas were all below 1% last month. The Twin Cities area added nearly 15,900 jobs over the 12-month period, resulting in a growth rate of just 0.8%.

Mankato saw a job growth rate of 0.4%, with only 224 jobs added. St. Cloud added 340 jobs for a growth rate of 0.3%, while Duluth added just 118 jobs, equating to a growth rate of 0.1% from May 2024 through last month.

Statewide, the annualized job growth rate was 1.3%, with a net gain of about 40,200 jobs over the 12-month period ending in May. By comparison, the national job growth rate was 1.1%.

Minnesota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked up by a tenth of a point from April to May, despite a net job gain of approximately 6,600. The report also shows the state’s labor force grew by about 2,300 people, while the labor force participation rate held steady at 68.2%.
