A news release issued by the Rochester Fire Department says crews were to the building shortly before 3:45 p.m. on the report that the apartment’s carbon monoxide alarms were sounding.
The call came from the Nicholas Apartments at 722 West Center St.
The first crew to arrive began monitoring the environment and requested more resources after quickly detecting widespread carbon monoxide, officials say.

Firefighters then cleared 115 residents from the 83-unit building, the news release says. Crews used the building’s HVAC system and electric fans to ventilate the apartment building.
No injuries were reported at the scene. Rochester Public Transit sent buses to the scene to transport the evacuated occupants to another building, where they waited until the scene was deemed safe, the fire department says.
A damage estimate has not yet been determined. Mayo Clinic Ambulance and Minnesota Power also responded to the scene.
