The incident began around 3:30 Sunday afternoon and was resolved around 10 p.m. Sunday. Police were initially dispatched to the situation on the report of a disturbance involving threats with a firearm.
A news release issued Sunday night by the South St. Paul Police Department says the call for service came from a multi-unit apartment building in the 200 block of Marie Ave. in South St. Paul.
Responding officers found the suspect, described as a 62-year-old man from South St. Paul, in the hallway upon their arrival. Police say he had a rifle and refused officer commands to surrender before fleeing into an apartment.
Members of multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the apartment to evacuate other residential units and secure the scene.
Law enforcement spent about two hours trying to negotiate a surrender with the suspect before calling a SWAT team to the scene, the news release says.
About 6.5 hours after responding, the SWAT team deployed a chemical irritant that flushed the man out of the apartment, authorities say. Law enforcement then took him into custody.
First responders treated the man for what the news release describes as minor injuries. He was then taken to the Dakota County Jail.
The man’s name and potential charges he faces have not been released. The South St. Paul Police Department is investigating the incident.
