The driver of the SUV, identified as 36-year-old Samantha Petersen of Wabasha, was subsequently charged after an investigation determined she was the SUV driver, court records say.
Fillmore County Court documents allege Samantha’s Twin sister, Sarah Beth Petersen of Wabasha, got to the scene before law enforcement and told investigators she was driving after her sister told her she was high on methamphetamine at the time of the crash.
As a result of the alleged attempt to deceive law enforcement, Sarah was charged with 16 felony counts, including multiple counts of aiding and abetting criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation.
Court records indicate Sarah admitted to two counts of felony criminal vehicular operation on Tuesday in exchange for the dismissal of the other charges.
She’s scheduled to be sentenced in March. Samantha was also in court on Tuesday.
She faces six counts of criminal vehicular homicide, six counts of criminal vehicular operation, along with gross misdemeanor counts of DWI and several misdemeanor traffic violations.
Court records indicate a July 14 trial date was set following her court appearance on Tuesday. A pretrial hearing is scheduled to take place in June.
