The babysitter told deputies he was watching a one-year-old, six-year-old, two eight-year-olds and a 14-year-old when he heard a popping sound coming from the basement. The man said he then saw an electrical panel had caught on fire.

The babysitter told authorities he put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, got the children out of the home and called 911. Parkin said no injuries were reported.

The one-year-old was evaluated for smoke inhalation but not transported from the scene for further medical care.  Parkin praised the babysitter’s quick thinking and action to prevent further harm and damage.

Eyota Ambulance and Fire also responded to the home. A fire inspector went to the home on Friday and has not yet determined what caused the fire, Parkin said.
