Beleaguered Minnesota School Superintendent Submits Resignation

Byron, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Superintendent of the Byron School District has submitted his resignation.

Members of the district’s community were informed of the resignation via email on Friday afternoon. It comes as the school district grapples with a multi-million dollar budget shortfall.

A parent also recently launched a petition calling for the district’s superintendent to step down.

Byron, MN Superintendent Dr. Mike Neubeck Submits Resignation Amid District's Ongoing Financial Struggles

The email states that Dr. Mike Neubeck submitted his resignation after a conversation with the Byron School Board regarding the district’s future direction. 

Neubeck’s resignation will be effective on June 30, 2025, according to the email. He was appointed to the position in July of 2021. 

Neubeck and the district became under fire after having to enact sweeping cuts to solve a $2 million budget shortfall in May. 

A subsequent audit found the district was still $2 million over budget after enacting the sweeping cuts. 

This fall Byron School District was dealt another financial blow when voters rejected a referendum that would’ve increased the district per-pupil funding by $800 per student. 

The email says Neubeck’s resignation provides the district with the needed time and opportunity to find a replacement. The full email, obtained by KROC News, is included below.

After discussion with the Byron School Board regarding the future direction of the district, Dr. Mike Neubeck has submitted his resignation as Superintendent, effective June 30, 2025. This decision is made with a shared commitment to ensuring the stability of the district while maintaining a continued focus on our mission to serve students, staff, and the community. Dr. Neubeck’s decision provides the Byron School District with the necessary time and opportunity to hire a new superintendent.

The School Board expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Mike Neubeck for his leadership and significant contributions to Byron Public Schools since his appointment in July 2021. We look forward to continued collaboration as we transition into the next chapter for Byron Public Schools.
