Southwest Minnesota Road Closures Lifted (Update)
Update: MnDOT has lifted all road closures and travel restrictions as of 9 a.m. Friday.
Previous Version: Fairmont, MN (KROC-AM News)- Snowfall and strong winds caused the closure of several major roadways southwest Minnesota Thursday.
The area was under a Winter Weather Advisory on Thursday. Travel conditions in the region began to deteriorate as the snowfall moved in.
The conditions are believed to have contributed to a pileup crash on Hwy. 60 between Worthington and Brewster. Authorities then issued a no-travel advisory for the area around 3 p.m. as strong winds began to blow snow and significantly reduce visibility.
MnDOT then announced the closure of I-90 between Fairmont and Jackson around 8 p.m. Transportation officials also shut down several state highways in the area.
Snow Plows are out in the area Friday morning trying to make the roads passable enough to reopen to traffic, however officials say that job is being made difficult by stranded vehicles, snow and ice. The road closures remain in place as of 7:30 a.m. Friday.
