At Least 3,000 Gallons of Crude Corn Oil May Have Spilled into Mississippi River in Red Wing

The news release says 3,000 to 3,500 gallons of crude corn oil may have entered the Mississippi River from a barge that was at the ADM riverfront facility.

Officials say ADM crews had placed a containment boom around the barge by the time fire crews got there to prevent the product from flowing downstream.

The Red Wing Community Awareness and Emergency Response also responded to strengthen containment and assist with cleanup.

Red Wing firefighters placed additional booms down river from the spill to contain any additional oil.

Officials Say No Immediate Risk to the Public

Officials say the spill does not pose an immediate risk to the public. No injuries were reported.

The Minnesota State Duty Officer, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Goodhue County Emergency Management were also made aware of the corn oil spill.

Officials have tabbed Clean Harbors to remove the product and to conduct cleanup operations and turned the scene over to ADM and Clean Harbors for continued mitigation and response.
