High Speed Chase Led to Red Wing Murder Suspect’s Arrest
Red Wing, MN (KROC-AM News) - The man charged with a fatal shooting in Red Wing this week is also facing prosecution in western Wisconsin for leading a Pierce County deputy on a high-speed chase early Tuesday.
The criminal complaint filed against 26-year-old Charles Deonta Jones says speeds during the pursuit reached 120 mph on Highway 63 in the Hager City area. Officials say the car driven by Jones eventually crashed along a rural road and he allegedly fled while carrying a handgun. Jones surrendered a few minutes later and a search of the area led to the recovery of a 9 mm handgun and a T-shirt that appeared to have a bullet hole and bloodstains.
The chase occurred while police in Red Wing were beginning their investigation into the shooting death of 27-year-old Dangelo Masterjohn, who was found dead from a gunshot wound to his chest on a sidewalk in a residential neighborhood just after midnight Tuesday. Goodhue County prosecutors filed a criminal complaint against Jones on Wednesday charging him with second and third murder, along with second degree manslaughter.
The charges allege Masterjohn was shot after he and Jones got into an argument during a gathering of people at the suspect’s residence near where his body was found. Witnesses also reported that the victim was seen removing his T-shirt after he had been shot.
