Rochester Man Faces New Charges After Jail Assault on Deputies
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A man jailed on charges that he threatened a person with a knife while yelling racial slurs at the victim has now been accused of assaulting two detention deputies in the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center.
Court records indicate 56-year-old Vincent Ray Mathis was charged with second-degree assault in late August. The criminal complaint alleges he pointed a knife at another man and walked toward him while directing racial slurs at the victim inside a store in northwest Rochester in the early morning hours of August 28.

It was also alleged that he threw the knife at the victim before he left the business. Rochester police were told by an employee of the store that Mathis had come into the business on three previous occasions and was yelling racial slurs.
The new criminal complaint accuses Mathis of assaulting a detention deputy inside the male intake unit of the county jail on the afternoon of October 4. The court document states that Mathis punched the deputy on the forehead and then spit saliva onto the face of another deputy after he had been subdued and was being picked up from the floor by staff.
In addition to the prior second-degree assault charge, Mathis now also faces two felony counts of fourth-degree assault involving a correctional employee. He remains in jail with his conditional bail set at $30,000.
His first court appearance on the new charges is scheduled to take place in late January.
