The man killed in the shooting was identified by Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) as 47-year-old Cleavon White of Rochester. The officer who fired the fatal shots was identified as Officer Josiah Duit, who has three years of law enforcement experience.
Officers responded to an apartment in the 1900 block of Ashland Dr. NW on the night of March 11 on the report of a domestic situation involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis who was threatening his young children in the residence.
Rochester Police and the BCA indicated a social worker who was at the scene with officers determined White needed to be placed in a 72-hour mental health hold. The shooting happened when officers attempted to take White into custody.

The video of the deadly encounter, released on Wednesday, shows three officers at the scene. Two officers were on the sides of White and one officer was standing in front of him.

The officer to White’s left is seen putting his hands on White’s left arm and that’s when the struggle began. White began going down to the ground as the struggle ensued.
As White went down, an apparent gunshot was heard followed by one of the officers saying, “He’s grabbing my gun.” That sequence was followed by officer Duit firing multiple gunshots.
Multiple people are heard screaming in the background after the gunshots. After the shooting one officer asks “where is the gun” and the officer replies “it’s still in my holster.”
