Super Bowl Displays Attract Tens of Thousands to Nicollet Mall
Undated (KROC AM News) - The weather was a bit cool and breezy but there were large crowds Saturday checking out the the Super Bowl displays in Minneapolis and the Ice Palace in St. Paul.
Thousands strolled indoors and outdoors at Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis Saturday to see dozens of Super Bowl-related displays, catch live entertainment and shop and dine. One of the most visible displays was the Birkebeiner Bridge (Birkie Bridge) but it was closed because Friday’s warm weather created too much ice on the snow-covered span that is 200 feet long and crosses over a street. The bridge was expected to reopen Sunday.
The Ice Palace is located in downtown St Paul’s Rice Park and is part of the city’s annual Winter Carnival. It consists of 4,000 blocks of lake ice that tower 70 feet over the park. There was some concern Friday when temperatures warmed into the 40’s but Saturday was more normal with highs around 30. Thousands checked out the palace and ice sculptures in the park on Saturday and were entertained by the Winter Carnival’s King Boreas Grand Day Parade.
