Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota-based Target has announced plans to significantly increase the number of black employees in its workforce.

The retailing giant has set a goal of increasing the number of black team members throughout the company by 20-percent over the next three years. A news release issued Thursday identified some systemic changes designed to assist the careers of black employees.

Target says the changes include programs to hire and retain black team members in career areas with low levels of representation such as technology, data sciences, merchandising, and marketing. The company also plans to increase its network of mentors and sponsors to help black employees accelerate and advance their careers. Target leaders and team members will also be given anti-racist trainings.

The news release notes that about half of all Target employees are people of color and over half are women. It also says nearly 50-percent of the company's leadership team are women and almost 25-percent are people of color.
