The wisdom of the deal that led to freedom for a U.S. soldier was the hot topic Tuesday on Rochester Today with Tom Ostrom and Andy Brownell on KROC-AM.

Bowe Bergdahl had been held captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan for about five years before the Obama administration won his freedom over the weekend through a deal that included the release of five top Taliban commanders from the U.S. Guantanamo Bay Detention Center.

The arrangement has proved to be highly controversial for the president, with many critics questioning the decision to free the terrorist leaders and possibly harm other Americans, along with the circumstances surrounding the Army Sergeant's capture five years ago. One caller to the program made the comparison to a hypothetical Civil War trade-off of five top Confederate commanders for a single Union soldier.  Would Abraham Lincoln have approved it?

It was also noted that a longtime contributor to Rochester Today is on the ballot for a statewide office this year.  Bill Kuisle was endorsed by Minnesota Republicans last weekend to run for Lieutenant Governor as Gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson's running mate.
