St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Candidates wishing to join the long list of contenders for the upcoming special election in southern Minnesota's First Congressional District have one more day to join the fray.

Three more candidates filed for the seat left vacant by the death of Republican Congressman Jim Hagedorn in February. His widow, Jennifer Carnahan was among them. She and Rochester State Representative Nels Pierson joined eight other Republicans in seeking to represent the First District during the final few months of Congressman Hagedorn's term in office. Democrat James Rainwater also filed as a candidate today. He is the seventh Democrat to file for the seat. A total of 18 candidates have filed, including one from the Legal Marijuana Now Party.

Richard Reisdorf is currently the only candidate on the list who will not have to run in the May 24 primary election. On that day, voters in the First District will be asked to narrow the long list of Republican and Democrat candidates down to a single candidate from each party to appear on the ballot for the special election on August 9.

The candidate filing period for the special election closes at 5 PM on Tuesday.
