Lawsuit Filed Over 2023 Death in Olmsted County Jail
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Twin Cities law firm has named Olmsted County in a federal lawsuit concerning the 2023 death of a man detained in the Olmsted County jail.
The firm Storms Dworak issued a press release announcing the lawsuit, which also names Advanced Correctional Healthcare, USA Medical and Psychological Staffing, a nurse, and two Olmsted County detention deputies. It alleges "deliberate indifference" by the staff of the jail and medical staff employed by Advanced Correctional Healthcare in the death of 59-year-old Melvin Bush.
According to the lawsuit, an autopsy determined Bush's death was caused by acute complications of a perforated duodenal ulcer. Bush was detained in the jail for allegedly violating a felony Domestic Abuse Contact Order.

Following his death in 2023, the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office stated that a detention deputy conducting routine well checks discovered Bush was not breathing. A news release says the deputy called for assistance and immediately began attempting to resuscitate him, but Bush died after being transported to St. Marys Hospital.
