Lead Pipe Concerns? RPU Program Could Replace Yours Free
Rochester Public Utilities has been contacting property owners potentially eligible to participate in RPU's Led Service Line Replacement Program.
During a recent appearance with Andy Brownell during the Rochester Today Show on News Talk 1340 KROC-AM and 96.9 FM, RPU General Manager Tim McCollough described how the program was established to identify and replace lead or galvanized water service pipes that are still providing water to homes and other buildings in Rochester. A recent study found that approximately 1300 of the 41,000 properties served by Rochester Public Utilities may have led or galvanized service pipes.
McCollough says homes constructed before 1979 could have led service lines and plumbing that was installed before 1986 may have galvanized pipes that used lead-based solder. RPU's website includes an interactive map that allows homeowners to check if there property might eligible for participation in the program.
Over a period of years, RPU plans to enroll the affected property owners in the program and replace the lead and galvanized service lines at no cost to the homeowners. It's hoped the project can be completed by the end of 2028.
