Minnesota’s exports increased to $5.4-billion dollars in the second quarter.  The State Department of Employment and Economic Development says that’s up 3.6-percent from the same three month period last year.

“Minnesota’s strong second quarter reflects an economy that is healthy and expanding,” said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben. “Foreign sales of Minnesota-made high-quality products are contributing to job growth and expansions throughout the state, particularly in manufacturing.”

Canada remained Minnesota’s largest market, although exports to our neighbor to the north were down 1-percent in the second quarter at $1.4-billion dollars. The report also shows sales to China fell 2-percent to $580-million, but exports to Mexico shot up 61-percent to over $540-million dollars from April through June.

The report shows shipments of optic/medical products, which are Minnesota’s leading export, rose 8-percent from last year to $918-million dollars  The state’s second largest export category, machinery, experienced a 17-percent decline to $907 million dollars.
