The proceedings were originally scheduled to begin in January, but was pushed back to June 16 after the judge granted a motion from the defense to delay the proceedings.
DFL Sen. Nicole Mitchell partook in this year’s legislative session after being granted the delay.

It was pushed back a second time, following the June 14 shooting deaths of House DFL Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark and the shooting that left Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvett wounded.
Jury Selection to Start Monday in Burglary Trial of Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell
Becker County court records indicate Sen. Mitchell's trial is scheduled to begin with jury selection on Monday. Sen. Mitchell is facing felony charges of first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools.
Police in Detroit Lakes arrested the Woodbury lawmaker when they discovered her in the basement of her stepmother's home in April of 2024, the criminal complaint in the case says.
Mitchell was dressed in all black clothing and wearing a black hat. She also had a flashlight that had a black sock covering it—an apparent modification to limit the amount of light it emitted, the charges say.
Once in custody, Mitchell told the officers that she was trying to retrieve a couple of her late father's belongings because her stepmother would no longer speak with her, the court document says.
