Rochester Downtown Historic District Decision on Hold
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester City Council has decided to hold off on acting on a recommendation to create a historic district in downtown Rochester.
The Council voted Monday night to table the issue until its August 19th meeting to give city staff time to assemble additional information concerning a variety of issues raised by the elected officials during their discussion on the proposal from the Rochester Heritage Preservation Commission. They include whether there is a way for the city to compensate or assist property owners facing additional costs as a result of having a building within the proposed district.
The Heritage Preservation Commission is hoping to create a “landmark” district that basically runs from the north side of 2nd Street to 4th Street Southwest between 1st Avenue and the east side of South Broadway with the addition of the Riverside Building at the southeast corner of South Broadway and 4th Street. 18 of the 30 property owners who would be affected have gone on record as opposed to the designation.
