Rochester, MN Man Facing 27 Felonies for Drive-by Shooting
La Crosse, WI (KROC-AM News)- The District Attorney in La Crosse County filed 27 felony charges Wednesday against the Rochester man accused of injuring seven people during a drive-by shooting in downtown La Crosse last weekend.
31-year-old Deandrew Grant was arranged on the charges Wednesday. The shooting occurred in an area of downtown La Crosse populated by multiple bars and restaurants. The charges say security camera footage in 100 block of 3rd St. South captured Grant and another man appearing to engage in a fight outside of a downtown bar. Grant is seen fleeing the area on foot.
Moments later, a black SUV is seen driving the wrong way on the one way street and windows of surrounding bars and restaurants are seen being broken out by apparent gunfire, the complaint says. One of the gunshot victims said they saw a group of people appear to have “shooed” Grant from the area about 5-10 minutes before the gunfire.
The initial report from La Crosse Police indicated six people were hit by the gunfire, however the charges say investigators believe seven people were hit in the shooting. An investigator spoke with six of the victims, all of whom appeared to have been bystanders to the shooting and altercation based on statements given to law enforcement listed in court documents.
Four of the victims were hit by gunshots while they were inside of a pizza restaurant. One of the victims was at a neighboring bar and restaurant and one victim was on the sidewalk at the time of the gunfire, according to the charges. Police observed pooling blood in the area of the shooting along with broken out windows and bullet holes in a nearby vehicle and building.
The criminal complaint details the wounds police observed after speaking with the victims. Officers could not speak with one of the victim’s because they were in surgery at the time of the law enforcement interviews.
Investigators tracked Grant’s movements through surveillance cameras. He is seen abandoning the vehicle he was driving in a downtown alleyway and seen throwing a gun that was recovered on a roof. The gun had rounds inside that matched shell casings found at the scene.
Grant was apprehended without incident near the La Crosse Juvenile Detention Center about six hours after the shooting. He admitted to being involved in a downtown incident in which people got hurt but declined to answer any questions.
Grant is facing six felony counts of Attempted first-degree intentional homicide, five counts of substantial battery-intend bodily harm, 15 counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and a count of possessing a firearm while convicted of an out of state felony.
A judge earlier this week set Grant’s cash bond at $1 million. Detention records indicate he remains in custody at the La Crosse County Jail.
