Sentencing Date Set in Rochester Murder Case
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A sentencing hearing has been scheduled in March for a woman who admitted murdering another homeless individual in Rochester last year.
26-year-old Ruth Miller today finalized a plea agreement announced earlier in the week by formally entering a guilty plea to a second-degree murder charge in Olmsted County Court. The conviction stems from the death of 28-year-old Marcus Martin, whose body was discovered last June at Mayo Park in downtown Rochester.
According to court documents, Miller spoke with Rochester police investigators shortly after Marcus' body was found and told them that she had strangled him with a belt. The documents also state that she took officers to the Rochester Public Library, where she had stashed the victims belongings. She claimed that Martin had told her he wanted to die.
After an autopsy confirmed that Martin's death was the result of strangulation, Miller was taken into custody and charged with second-and degree murder and interference with a dead body.
The plea agreement states the presumptive sentence for the conviction is more than 27 years in prison.
