Chicago Man Pleads Guilty For Recent Fentanyl Bust in Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Chicago man with previous felony drug convictions in Olmsted County has entered a guilty plea in connection with a drug bust in Rochester in late March.
According to the criminal complaint in the case, Olmsted County Sheriff's deputies went to a Rochester apartment building to execute a search warrant and spotted 31-year-old Robert Edward Collins III getting into a vehicle and leaving the property. The court document indicated Collins was the subject of multiple active arrest warrants and ran on foot after the vehicle was stopped by law enforcement.
While he was being pursued, the deputies saw him toss a blue object that was later found to contain nearly 500 fentanyl pills. The charges state that Collins was apprehended in a nearby backyard.
He was charged with first-degree drug possession and a misdemeanor count of fleeing police. Under the terms of his plea agreement, Collins admitted to the first-degree drug charge in exchange for the dismissal of the fleeing police charge.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in March. The conviction carries a presumptive sentence of 128 months in prison. His defense attorney has signaled that he will argue for a downward departure to a stayed prison term and probation, but if that fails, the plea agreement document calls for a 110 month prison term.
